The cheetah is a large cat that is native to central Iran and Africa. It is one of the fastest animals on land, achieving speeds of up to 93 mph. Its unique combination of adaptations, including long, thin legs and a long tail, enable it to travel long distances and accelerate quickly.

Cheetahs have long, slender bodies, strong legs, and a flexible spine. They can cover a great distance with each stride, covering about 20 to 22 feet in a single leap. Their slender bodies enable them to sprint and run quickly without straining their joints. They are also able to eat and kill their prey in a matter of seconds, making them an excellent choice for short distances.

Cheetahs can be found throughout Africa, but their numbers are declining due to human conflict, poaching, and habitat loss. Today, the cheetah occupies about 10% of its historic range. Their habitats are primarily in eastern, southern, and northern Africa. There are also a few Asiatic cheetahs living in Iran. These species are critically endangered and are in danger of extinction.

In the ancient world, cheetahs were closely associated with humans. Sumerians carved a portrait of a leashed cheetah on their official seal, and in ancient Egypt, the cheetah was revered as a symbol of royalty. The Egyptian cat goddess Mafdet was associated with cheetahs, and many historical figures - including Akbar the Great of India - kept cheetahs in their stable. Cheetahs were also used as sport. Some hunters would release cheetahs near a quarry.

Cheetahs breed throughout the year and can have a litter of three or four cubs. The cubs are highly vulnerable to predators, so their mothers stay with them until they are fully independent. They begin learning to hunt by playing with their siblings. They can survive for up to 20 months, and their cubs can reach sexual maturity at around two years of age.

Cheetahs do not roar, but they do produce unique sounds. Their most common vocalization is a "chirp" reminiscent of a house cat's meow. The sound may serve as a tactile signal to other cheetahs. This sound may also help them locate each other.

In the past, cheetahs were widespread in North America, Europe, and Asia. However, their numbers declined during the last ice age. People saw them as a danger to crops and livestock and were also hunting them for their fur. Because of this, cheetahs are now classified as endangered.

Cheetahs have incredible speed. In fact, they are the fastest land mammal on earth. Their strides are almost eighteen feet long and they can reach speeds of over 60 mph. They can maintain these speeds for approximately 30 seconds, which is remarkable for a cat of their size.
